BEINGS LOST AND FALLEN
I. NOW THE WAVES THEY DRAG YOU DOWN
The fallen are a neutral existence without direction and without repose. It is said that their existence is among the saddest of them all. They lie between the extremities of heaven and hell, doomed to walk fields of Asphodel among the souls of humans who lived lives that were neither good nor bad. They make their homes among the leafless birch forests, clothed in fog and dust. They struggle with the personal moralities, struggle to fit in a universe that insists in its black and whiteness, even if a gradient of greys most certainly exist.
The fallen hail from all walks of morality, but share various characteristics. They are greatly weakened from their "fall". Angels who have fallen have lost their grace and one of their wings. Demons who have fallen have lost their mark and had gone through the painful process of becoming one-winged.
Fallen Angels lack the true form that their angelic/demonic forms possessed, which seems to lighten the burden of existence for these beings. However, they gain a semblance of a soul. They take on a human appearance that requires little to no effort to maintain. As they are tied to a plane that is closer to the Earth's frequency, they may choose to stay on Earth for as long as the please... if they could find their way to Earth. They require no vessel and do not possess the ability to take on a human host. They can still hear the whispers of heaven and hell faintly, though they are silent in their contributions to their discussions.
The true names that they had possessed no longer have power over them. In fact, they no longer possess a true name, making them essentially anonymous. To be nameless is to lose identity. They will go by human names, though there will always be a natural yearning for a true name.
II. CARRY YOU TO BROKEN GROUND
There are no ranks and no honors in becoming fallen. The Fallen are essentially exiles and outcasts of their respective conclaves. The Dominion of the Fallen is a lonely place, and no authority has been given to anyone among the Fallen.
The Fallen are weaker than their previous forms. However, the strengths of the various Fallen may vary, depending on how highly ranked they were as Angels or Demons. A Fallen Virtue's abilities would still be capable of things that a regular angel could do. A Fallen lower demon would be just about as powerful as a human.
One being among the fallen is much more powerful than the rest. That being is the neutral Angel of Death, who bears the Scythe, a weapon that could hurt even the Archangels and the Principalities. The Angel of Death is responsible for bringing humans into the afterlife at the time that they are destined to die. The Angel of Death holds power comparable to the Archangels and the Principalities, and therefore, the Fallen hold some respect for the Angel of Death. The Fallen largely maintain their autonomy and best try not to upset the balance of life and death that the Angel of Death has kept. This hasn't stopped the Fallen from bringing human souls back to Earth, though.
III. THOUGH I FOUND YOU IN THE SAND
The Fallen are always derived from former Angels and Demons.
The Fallen that had once roamed the halls of heaven had been tainted of their purity and had gone through the painful process of one of their wings being removed. Their grace may not have been completely removed— rather, their grace may lie dormant within them.
The Fallen that once hailed from hell may have been shaken. An act of mercy could convert a demon to Fallen. Their mark has been rescinded, no longer completely damned, but not quite holy as well.
In Purgatory, they are almost equal to the humans they walk amongst.
IV. WIPE YOU CLEAN WITH DIRTY HANDS
One does not wish to remain in the Fallen state for too long. Like the human souls they roam amongst, they, too, have the possibility of becoming hostile souls that ravage Purgatory. Many Fallen decide to become mortal humans, effectively losing the memories they had gathered for the entirety of their existences, living and dying, hoping to find eternal rest.
